Vendor Spotlight – Axis Lighting in Montreal

Every so often, Elsy designers have the opportunity to travel with manufacturers to experience their factory/showrooms to gain a better understanding of their company, products and capabilities.

Finding Inspiration in the Desert

As designers at Elsy, we’ve developed a strong culture of continuous improvement. We’re always looking for ways to push ourselves to the next level – to learn more and seek out new ideas and inspiration. To that end, I recently had the honor of participating in the Knoll Upstart leadership program, which brings together design professionals once a month to explore various topics impacting the design industry.

Trend Watch – Corporate Goes Boho

Boho is back. Five years ago, this statement would have applied to a millennial’s apartment or maybe a trendy hotel, but you would have been hard pressed to find it applied to a corporate office. And yet, here we are! Check out this gorgeous palette for a project we just completed for Adswerve, a marketing technology company, for their new offices at 999 18th St. in downtown Denver. Some definite bohemian influences, no?

We’re excited to share that the project is now complete, and Hyder Construction has moved into its new headquarters!

Earth Day Inspired Interior Design

Look Outside for Inspiration Inside

Earth Day is a good reminder to all of us to consider our impact on and our connection to our planet and to nature. As designers, not only do we have a responsibility to create spaces that are good for people – that inspire, and support health and happiness – we also have a responsibility to consider the legacy our designs leave. That can take many forms – from using more sustainable or recycled materials to bringing natural elements into the design to provide people with stronger connections to nature. (more…)

What Does It Mean to be an Interior Designer?

When people think of interior design, they often think about picking out paint colors, or selecting furniture and artwork. The truth is, there’s a great deal more to the profession, and it takes more than a business card to call yourself an interior designer. Education, a certain level of experience – there’s even a test! (more…)

Britney Heim, Elsy Studios Interior Designer

Welcoming Britney Heim

Everyone has a different story. We didn’t all arrive in the design profession by the same route. That diversity of experiences helps to shape our individual approaches and – we believe – makes us a stronger, more creative team.

Britney Heim, Elsy’s newest Interior Designer, is a perfect example. Her path to commercial design was unconventional, but we appreciate the experiences it gave her, and we think you will too. (more…)

Elsy Studios: Repurposing Materials Interior Design Denver

Materials Three Ways

As part of our Elsy Inspires series, we’re kicking off a new regular feature where we’ll show you how we used one particular material in three different applications. We’re starting with reclaimed wood. Not only is it a sustainable choice that adds a warm, biophilic element to a space, it’s also extremely versatile. Contrary to what you might think, not all reclaimed wood has to be used to create a “rustic” vibe. As you’ll see in these applications, it can be used in even the most modern of spaces. (more…)

Home Interior Design Tips

Creating a Designer Space in Your Own Home

In Denver’s Five Points neighborhood, Elsy Principal Cathy Loftus and her husband, Jim, have created a unique urban oasis.

Using an innovative mix of custom pieces and budget-friendly design elements, the couple’s favorite spot in the home has quickly become their “wine lounge.”

“This space is all about being able to entertain and enjoy space with our friends. We really wanted a space that when we’re hosting dinner parties, we can entertain our guests, our guests can sit down and enjoy themselves and still be a part of what’s going on,” Cathy says. (more…)

Small Space. Big Design.

Tight on Budget? Great Design Doesn’t Have to Break the Bank

It’s a common misconception that great design requires a big budget. Sure, with some extra dollars to spend, you can upgrade to high-end finishes, materials and design elements, but at the heart of great design is creativity, strategy and perspective… and those things don’t depend on a bank account. They come from hiring inventive designers who are willing to work within your parameters to deliver a final product that is striking and memorable. (more…)

Denver Design Week: Healthy Workplace Discussion

3 Design Elements for a Healthy Workplace

I recently came across a staggering figure: The average American spends 93 percent of their life indoors – 87 percent in buildings and 6 percent in vehicles. If the majority of your time is spent inside somewhere, it should go without saying the design of the indoor environment should support your health and wellbeing, right? But only in the last two decades or so has much attention been paid to what that means for workplaces – the place we adults spend the majority of our days.

CREW: Breaking Barriers to Success

I recently had the opportunity to speak on a panel alongside my peers, friends and mentors in the commercial real estate industry. The CREW: Breaking Barriers to Success event bought together local female entrepreneurs to discuss the challenges we’ve faced and some of the insight we’ve gained along the way.

Sitting up there with Kristen Cummings (Chief Experience Officer, VESTA), Megan Walsh (Principal and Co-Founder, Catalyst Planning Group), Martha Weidmann (CEO & Co-Founder, NINE dot ARTS) and Traci Lounsbury (President and Co-Owner, ELEMENTS), I knew I was in good company.

Floral Ceiling Pattern Interior Design

Inspired Design: Three Projects, One Award-Winning Pattern

Inspiration can spark at any time, and you need to pay attention when it does. When Architect and Elsy Associate Sarah Zales had an idea while traveling mid-flight, she immediately began sketching.

Little did she know, that spark of inspiration, which was originally intended as a ceiling design solution, would turn into a design carried throughout multiple projects in the coming year. From a large-scale custom millwork art piece installed on a ceiling to a unique vessel for a floral arrangement and finally as a custom pattern for an award-winning haute couture dress, the design proved to be not only versatile, but also memorable in each context. Deck the Halls: Office Edition

‘Tis the season to deck the halls. Who doesn’t love some garland and a string of lights? But, just like your decorations at home, décor in the office reflects your personality, or in this case, the company’s culture. Decorations can make a first impression to clients and even double as a team activity. They should be fun, but they should also be thoughtful. Which is why we put together these four tips to help you get started! (more…)

Together We Make a Difference

I know this blog is generally devoted to the work we do here at Elsy Studios to create truly memorable spaces. It’s work I’m proud of, and I promise, I’ll return you to your regularly scheduled programming tomorrow. Today, I want to share an experience that has me feeling inspired and hopeful. – Lynn

It’s been an intense few weeks, right? With all the divisiveness our country is experiencing right now, it’s easy to feel like one person can’t make much of a difference – that the challenges we face are just too big.

I found myself reflecting about this feeling recently. And then I remembered a lesson I learned from my parents at a very early age.

The lesson was this: We are all stronger when we help our neighbors. (more…)

Design Details That Make Your Workplace Stand Out

Renowned Architect Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe once said, “God is in the details.” Still, others insist the details are where the devil is found. From a workplace design perspective, I’ve found both to be true. As a commercial interior designer with Elsy Studios, I always aim for the former, but often encounter the latter. When it comes to tenant planning, real estate and design teams are often so focused on the big picture and parsing square footage that they don’t see the potential impact of a few small, but important details. Keeping Creativity in Architecture and Design

Last week, I had the opportunity to speak at the Colorado Real Estate Journal’s 2014 Commercial Interior Architecture and Design Conference. At Elsy, we foster creativity by establishing an emotional connection with the project – from our initial drawings all the way to the finished space. We find that by tapping into the emotions of the designer, the client and the employees who will work in a space, we’re able to deliver a more creative and ultimately more impactful result. (more…)
