It’s a common misconception that great design requires a big budget. Sure, with some extra dollars to spend, you can upgrade to high-end finishes, materials and design elements, but at the heart of great design is creativity, strategy and perspective… and those things don’t depend on a bank account. They come from hiring inventive designers who are willing to work within your parameters to deliver a final product that is striking and memorable.

Take Local Café, for example. Formally known as The Sandwich Board, this restaurant is a well-known lunch spot for people who work in the Denver Tech Center. While their business was strong, the owners wanted to reinvigorate their 1,520-square-foot space to keep both customers and employees happy.

With budget as a primary consideration, our Elsy team conducted multiple pricing exercises to value engineer the project with affordable solutions that would also make a memorable design impact.

The first change was to improve the overall layout for a better customer experience. Instead of walking in and immediately seeing the soda fountain when entering the restaurant, patrons are now greeted with a branded experience that sets the tone for the rest of their visit.

Bringing the client’s vision for a modern, industrial look to life, the design uses warm tones and rustic woods throughout the space, incorporating simple materials and even hand-crafted elements, including a community table made from old trailer decking.

Restaurant Interior Design on a Budget

An engineered wood-look floor tile that is both durable and sophisticated complements the rustic wood wall that spans the entire length of the space. A new counter-height barista bar also highlights the expanded coffee offerings for morning commuters.

Local Café was a fun project that reinforced for us the importance of collaboration, flexibility and ingenuity. Walking into the space now, it’s undeniable that this redesign breathed new life into a lunchtime favorite.
