Creative by Nature: Midcentury Modern

When the Young family, who has deep artistic roots, bought this historic 1953 ranch-style home in Lakewood, Colorado, they saw the potential to make it their own, without losing its intrinsic architectural charm. Originally designed and built by Jesse Shwayder, the founder of Samsonite Luggage, the 7,800-square-foot residence sits on a peaceful one-acre lot and reflects classic midcentury modern architecture.

What started as a primary suite remodel in collaboration with Tucker Johnson Architecture quickly evolved into a full-home renovation. The goal: keep the home’s architectural integrity while transforming it into a comfortable, creative space for a modern family of four.

From the beginning, the design was grounded in the family’s personality and lifestyle. Their love of gardening inspired the design that connects the interior with the surrounding landscape. As collectors of vintage furniture and artwork, they needed a space that could serve as both a gallery and a gathering place. Every detail was considered to reflect these values.

The existing interior architecture, of exposed brick and wood structure, was preserved. Elsy Studios complemented the architecture with white, large format, porcelain floor tile. All the lighting in the residence was replaced with LED lighting and a vintage Midcentury chrome chandelier is now the centerpiece in the large dining room. The team created a clean yet character-rich backdrop for the family’s colorful art and midcentury pieces.

The layout was reimagined to encourage connection, with open, flexible living areas designed around a central kitchen and game table. The result is a home that honors its past while embracing the rhythm of everyday life for a young, vibrant family.
